A6 Project Final Piece: 'Vogue: Deconstructed' This was a two-week project where the only limitations were to produce twenty five images within an A6 format for display. I created a magazine displaying my A6 postcards where I explored and experimented with form, layout and collage, appropriating  Vogue magazine covers from the first release to the most recent. I chose to display my postcards in a magazine as a final piece as I wanted to take the postcards back to their original format: the magazine.

A6 Development On the left are my initial ideas for the A6 Project and a plan and potential layouts. On the right are two collages which I created to experiment with colour combinations, composition and placement of faces before beginning my practical experimentation.

Some of my A6 postcards These were the final postcards that I decided to take forward for my exhibition, selected from the initial 25. These are also those that are displayed in my final piece (magazine).  I chose the images to reflect the breadth of experimentation undertaken, including my own interventions with a variety of materials as well as pure collage.  I wanted to deconstruct the original layouts, but still make sure the new images created were recognisably Vogue covers.

Favourite A6 Postcards I have selected these three as my favourite postcards from the A6 Project. These three images are very different in composition, colour, and texture, however they all still maintain the iconic Vogue style that has progressed throughout the years. My favourite postcard form the entire A6 Project is in the middle. The colour combinations have made a soft background for the graphic image I have layered on top of the paint, all the elements have worked well together to create a unique and interesting layout which I loved creating. This image is the last postcard I made, and I think that through making the twenty five postcards, I learned what composition worked well for the collages I was layering over the Vogue covers.

3D Week: Utopia/Dystopia (4 day project) On the left is some of my research and ideas development that led to my 3D maquette (on the right).  This was the first project on my foundation course, where I created a floor plan for my idea of a shopping centre made from storage containers.  After researching minimalist art and brutalist architecture, I wanted to create work with simplified forms, with idealistic utopian aims.

Mono-printing Above are some examples of my mono-prints from the two day Graphic Design workshop in college. On the left is the 'normal' mono print, and on the right is the paper which was used to roll on. I chose to include this in my sketchbook as it gave a different texture and pattern compared to the normal mono prints I created.

Text from Ephemeral week These images are from a one week project within the discipline of Fashion and Textiles. The project had the theme of 'Ephemeral'. We were instructed to research sustainable fashion and what fashion is now. I created a fashion poster with graphic writing in order to display the importance of sustainable fashion today. On the right is another poster I created based on the 'Ephemeral' theme. I took the colours inspired by Autumn, which is ephemeral because seasons are short lived and are ever-changing.

Object and Narrative Project: Initial Research and Ideas In my most recent project: Object and Narrative, we were set with the task of choosing five different objects based on different categories (these seen in image), and to research into artists and designers who use object and narrative in their work. Here is some of my initial research for the project. I wanted to look at the way brands advertise their objects/products to their audience, and see how they structure their designs on their websites and social media platforms.

Follow-up Object and Narrative Research After my initial research, I chose to research into graphic design that was more relevant to my chosen objects and potential methods I wanted to use to create my font and alphabet. I also researched into the recent exhibition 'Can Graphic Design Save Your Life?' to see what kind of graphic design is most effective and why.

My Own Font In college, those specialising in graphic design has the task of creating their own font and alphabet based on the structure of one of their chosen objects. Above are my two main ideas for my final font. On the left is my font I have created which is inspired by the feeling of stress. I decided to treat stress as an object, and create a structure based on the feelings that come from stress (these are represented by the key in the image). I also created a font by using my chosen functional object: the paperclip. I then followed this us by creating a font with other functional objects such as split pins and string to see what materials worked best.

Layout plan For my Object Project I wanted to create a small-scale glossy book which displays my alphabet. Above are some potential layouts for my final piece. Here I have experimented with the composition and design of the pages which will display my font. Working with placement and creating samples of layout helped decide where to place the letters on the page and allowed me to visualise the final outcome.

Extension of Object project - printmaking Using found acrylic letters in relief printing I created a monochrome blend and put these through an Albion Press.  I enjoyed working with physical materials and hand printing the imagery.  The ink quality and embossing effects gave a different feel to the work compared to some of my other digitally printed work. On the right I have used a blend technique while screen printing to experiment with texture and colour.  I used an 'open screen' and a paper stencilled letter to build up layers.

Work Experience I took part in a work experience placement within my college working in the printmaking department. I was given the task of producing samples to demonstrate the various screen printing techniques and produce a display for other students to see.   I decided to use the actual name of each technique as a photographic stencil with which to print.  This allowed a simple yet very quick and direct way for students to understand the different effects obtainable.

Work Experience Above are some more samples from my work experience placement. Some here are successful and some are not. I have kept them all in my personal workbook for reference about these certain techniques, and how to overcome the problems that often occurred when making them. I have also kept the 'peel offs' from the samples and included them in my book,  scanning them in and mirroring and inverting them on a photocopier to test out different textures and colours.

Personal Workbook

Image
Personal Workbook These are some pieces I have created to experiment with layering of text and pattern.  On the left I have created a simple design. This was created on Microsoft Word. In the middle I have used graphic tape to create a border for this magazine cover I found. I liked the combination of both striking patterns. On the right this piece was also created in word, here I am experimenting with pattern and shape to create a background for simple text.  I have kept these in my personal workbook for reference for work in the future.

Personal Workbook Collage

Image
External Work from Personal Workbook This collage was inspired by Ciara Phelan. I am subscribed to Vogue and was inspired by the recent cover with Adwoa Aboah on. I scanned the cover in and decided to create a collage using the same colour palette as from the cover, inspired by Ciara Phelan's work. On the right, I have created another collage with the headpiece relating back to the words found on this old Vogue magazine cover.
